SOME GUCCI HISTORY

Born in 1881, craftsman’s son Guccio Gucci founded the House of Gucci as a saddlery shop in Florence in 1906. Guccio's first talent was his craftsmanship in leather goods. He started out selling leather bags to horsemen in the 1920’s and progressed to luxury luggage as his clients graduated from equine transportation to horseless carriages. In 1938  Gucci opened their first retail shop.

In 1947 the Gucci leather handbag a with bamboo handle, is created. During the 1950’s the red striped webbing is introduced, taken from its original form place on a saddle girth. This became an emblem that is still used today.

Guccio Gucci created many of his classics early during the 1950’s; products such as luggage, ties, shoes, and the famous handbags sporting the bamboo handle. After his death , his family was able to take the enormously successful company to new heights by opening stores in Paris, Beverly Hills, London, Palm Beach, and Tokyo. The 60's brought increased fame to the Gucci Empire. Such Hollywood stars as Grace Kelly, Peter Sellers and Audrey Hepburn made the name Gucci synonymous with “chic”. Jackie Kennedy helped by being photographed with the Gucci shoulder bag, which subsequently became known as the “Jackie O”.  Gucci adopts the GG logo at this time.

But with the fame and recognition of the brand name came some turmoil. While Gucci goods were considered a status symbol of the times, management and inner family seemed to disagree. Brother Maurizio Gucci took an apparently ailing business over from his founding brother, who in turn sold it to an Arab concern in the 80’s.

In the 1990’s, Tom Ford, Gucci’s newest executive head, has brought Gucci back to the center of chic, and now commands a varied line of products including leather fashions, perfumes,  cosmetics, shoes (including the moccasin with the distinctive Gucci snaffle-bit), the "Flora" foulard created for Grace Kelly by Rodolfo Gucci, suitcases, watches, jewelry, silk scarves, sports articles, belt clasps (the one with the Guccio Gucci initials, was introduced 1964), and eyeglasses.  Use our pages and listings to help make sure that you are recieving an authentic Gucci product!

GUCCI  AUTHENTICATION FACTS

Gucci products, unlike Chanel, Fendi & Coach, do not have "registerable" serial numbers.  All Gucci handbags have model numbers on the underside of the tag.  The front of the tag always states, " Gucci, made in Italy, with a (r) above for registered trademark.  It is imperative to be knowledgable in Gucci products such as the changes that they make from season to season.  For example the correct double row model number for the large horsebit hobo is 114900/213317.  Gucci tag fonts are different depending on what region of Europe they were manufactured.  Gucci is also one of the few designers to sell out of season imperfects or overtocks to their employees, in their outlet stores and to brokers.   In 2005 the large horsebit hobo had cream stitching while in 2006 brown stitching.  For this particular model, all colors and trims have this number.  What some people may not be aware of is that for Spring 08 Gucci has changed the bottom row number for most of their handbags.  Many of these numbers have been in place for several years, this will create some difficulty for buyers and sellers alike.

Up until the current season, the bottom row serial number has been one of the biggest indicators of a non authentic Gucci product.  There are many other things about a Gucci product that makes it non authentic including the exact measurment and relationship of the "g's" impressed the leather as guccissima and stitched into the jaguard fabric, the type of leather for the item, and the stitch color for that season.  Be sure to download our Gucci horsebit hobo authentication guide on our ebook page.  It is absolutely necessary if you are going to be purchasing the most popular and the most replicated model.

Authentic online sellers are almost always selling what is last year's model.  This is how the items can be discounted.  Thus the numbers that have been in place for several years.  This site will be updated as all the new numbers are made available to us through our communication with customer service and our boutique shopping adventures.  What will be happening is that buyers will see a different number on the tag than the item that they recieve and think an authentic item is NOT.  This is not the case.  Please email us with any Gucci authentication questions that you may have and check back as we will be updating the site regularly with  the new model numbers.  Always ask the seller what season the Gucci item is from.  For what we have seen so far, most items have the same top row number yet a new bottom row number has been assigned for many popular styles of handbags.
